I’ve been going through my holiday photos and found a couple that speak to this week’s WordPress weekly photo challenge theme of COMMUNITY.
These pictures are of the tiny and very picturesque fishing village of Clovelly on the northern coast of Devon. Fishing is a very community-oriented activity — the villagers go out in the boats as a fleet, come back in and then spent the next several hours sorting and gutting the fish to prepare them for distribution. We spoke to some fisherfolk in Clovelly, and they were getting a variety of fish and little sharks ready for the Spanish market.
Such a gorgeous village. Very inspiring from a fantasy-research point of view too. The way the white stone buildings clutter and tumble down the hill. The uneven cobble stones — not paved flat like one usually expects cobbles, but small, rounded and bumpy, making them quite tricky to walk on.
Fantasy novels and stories are almost always synonymous with communities — whether inhabitants of a fishing village, members of a religious group, a hidden guild of assassins…
There’s nothing like Clovelly in Australia. Which is what makes travelling to places like England, which have such a depth of history, such a thrilling experience for me.
Great photos and write-up, Ellen.
Excellent contributions to this week’s theme.

I look at those pictures and think, “I want to BE there!” Or at least set a story there…

Yeah, tell me about it! There was also a community of many cats I forgot to mention. π

Wonderfully higgledy-piggledy subjects π This reminds me of the village in which the TV series Doc Martin was filmed.

Heh – That’s Port Isaac, down the coast into Cornwall a bit. Not very far at all. I visited there as well. π
Thanks for dropping by.

Ellen, already my places-to-visit list is long, and this post and your pictures are not helping. Quaint. Picturesque. Straight-out-of-a-storybook.

Tell me about it! There are so many places I want to go — and places I would love to return to, as well. Clovelly — and many of the tiny villages in the south-west of England — are certainly magical places to visit.

I am afraid if I went to Clovelly, I would never leave. Beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
You know, I never thought about it before, but you’re right. “Fantasy novels and stories are almost always synonymous with communities…”

Heh – there’s not all that much to actually do there, so you might leave eventually. π
I hadn’t stopped to think about the link between fantasy and communities before this post either.
