My toy puggle

When I was a kid, one of my favourite toys was a puggle.

Nope, not some weird canine cross-breed, but something quintessentially Australian. A puggle is actually what they call baby platypuses and echidnas. They’re cute little things.

Not that I knew that then. Then, all I cared about was the little beanbag creature who lived in a bag with its nose poking out. They were all the rage. I admit mine is looking a little worse for wear… although not too bad for being 30 years old.

I also had a baby one, which wore a nappy (er, diaper) of all things. But now that I know a puggle is already a baby platypus, the idea of a baby puggle is clearly ridiculous. What were they thinkingβ€½

Toy puggles are the creation of an Australian company called The Lost Forests — their website explains how the story goes… I seem to recall they like eating split peas.

I came across my old puggle recently during The Big Clear-Out, and when today’s WordPress daily prompt of Toy Story appeared, it seemed the perfect moment to share.

So, people, meet my (nameless) puggle. It could easily be some creature out of a fantasy or science fiction story, couldn’t it?

For the non-Australians out there, what do you make of it? What weird toys did you have as a kid?

  1. I would have adored having a puggle as a kid. I have never heard of them. I had a stuffed pet monkey with a bendable tail (handy for hanging him places) and a white seal (that’s more of a dingy gray). A puggle would have been much more snuggly.

  2. That puggle is adorable and something I know my kids would love!

My favorite toy stuffed animal was a Winnie the Pooh. He was missing his nose and I don’t know whatever happened to him, but he was my fave and a picture of him is etched in my brain πŸ™‚

    1. Yay indeed – nice to hear people have kept their puggles. Also, I am a teeny bit jealous you have a red puggle in a purple bag… those are TOTALLY my colours! (As it happens, my puggle’s colours were coincidentally my house colours at school.)

Thanks so much for sharing. πŸ™‚
